NAMOC

Published on February 4, 2007

In case you didn’t know, that rather space-age sounding acronym stands for the National Art Museum of China, which luckily for us, is located in a massive compound in Beijing. Nick was back in town for the opening of a Guggenheim-NAMOC joint show of 100 years of American art. We went to the opening and got an eyeful. As impressive as the artwork was, the way viewers were excitedly snapping photos of themselves next to the paintings was even more interesting. It felt like we were at a tourist attraction, which I suppose, we were. I kept wondering what the guards thought of the artwork. Did they have any feeling towards the stuff at all, or were they silently praising the Warhol prints over the Rauschenberg collages?
