Harbin

Published on February 4, 2007

We donned our furry hats and headed off to Harbin for a couple of days. The capital of Heilongjiang province, Harbin is known as the “Ice City” as temperatures here dip well below freezing and the inhabitants use ice from the Songhua River to make spectacular sculptures. Rather than keeping people comfortably bundled indoors, the cold brings everyone out. The brave ones take dips in the river while others play soccer on ice and attempt to bicycle on frosted lakes.

Some people keep their ears warm using hamburgers.

Meals always involved a lazy susan and a big, round table.

Snacking on frozen fruit pops gave us the sugar we needed to deal with the intense cold.

Must be some Year of the Pig thing.

Given its proximity to Russia, it was no surprise that a crew of Russian ex-Olympic ice dancers was imported to enhance the festivities.
