We Love Beijing

Published on January 30, 2008

We love it here because there are impressive architectural feats like the Temple of Heaven structure. It’s looking shiny and new after its million dollar renovation and we’re lucky to be tourists in our own city.

On the same trip, we remarked on the ingenuity of Beijing entrepreneurs with their new technique of making phone number stencils. Phone numbers touting services as diverse as construction work and personal massages are usually written on the city’s walls by hand. They are removed daily by legions of sanitation workers, thus giving them a rather short media life span. This clever person has subverted that by simply making a stencil that he can re-use quickly and easily.

And finally, a wonderful sign that uses the word “decoration” to stand in for “renovation.”
