A creative conference brought Shu to Cambodia this past week, and I was fortunate enough to tag along and take some photos.

Pandas are cute. You’d have to be made of stone not to think so. The lure of seeing 30 or so of them in close proximity – close enough to touch and have one’s photo taken w/ said pandas – was too great for Shu and me to pass up, so we booked a flight to Chengdu and made our way to the Woolong Panda Breeding Center. The center is about a 3.5 hour drive from Chengdu that crosses some pretty mountainous terrain and some unforgiving stretches of unpaved road. The sight of pandas frolicking in every direction made the trip well worthwhile. Below, some photos:

Shu and I prepare to have our encounter with a panda recorded on film.

Shu couldn’t resist touching the panda’s ear (despite warnings from the panda handler), and received a light scratch for her temerity.

Demystifying the panda photo process: A) photographer, B) panda handler/food funnel, C) photo subject, D) local tourists who refuse to pay the 200 kuai minimum “donation” fee to lay hands on a panda.
